Hawaii Loa reef of Oahu is a great Hawaii scuba dive - Oahu Diving does this tour weekly.
Hawaii Loa is one of those out of the way diving locations in Oahu that other dive companies will seldom voyage to. Located about 1 mile east of the backside of Diamond Head the commute to this exotic location takes the longest at around 25 minutes. On flat, no wind days this is the ideal scuba diving location to go to. On windy day, get ready for an interesting boat ride, similar to what you see on those Alaska crab fishing boats. Ok, not that bad but would be a good idea to just skip Hawaii Loa until the wind dies down.
The ride down to Hawaii Loa is very picturesque with the beautiful mountains of Hawaii kai rising up not so far from the sea level beach areas. The clouds that form around these mountains are a constant reminder that Hawaii has some of the most unique weather in the world. Since we are heading in a north westerly directions we will be traveling straight for the east side of Diamond Head. The view is not the same as the opposite side of Diamond Head that visitors are so accustomed too. The water in this area is extremely blue and inviting, but don't worry. Relax, we are almost there.
About 5 minutes out from Hawaii Loa we should start getting ready. Gear checked, mask defogged and cameras ready to go. There is a mooring line under the water that we will use to moor up to. How do we find this ? Two ways. GPS and line cross line ups from Diamond Head and the mountains to the north. Actually very easy. Hawaii Loa is no more than 45 feet deep. It has an interesting crater that is jagged and in a circular shape with a diameter of around 100 yards. Inside the crater area is smaller plateaus, rocks and plenty of marine life. Turtles are common here and we we routinely sea white tip reef sharks as well. Bottom times here at Hawaii Loa can be long since the depths does not exceed 45 feet. This dive is also easy to navigate due to the circular shape of the reef.
Hawaii Loa can be a great dive for both beginner scuba divers and certified scuba divers of all levels. With plenty of coral and fish this reef will definitely have you asking us to take you back.
